Many teachers are taking their education to the next level and going back to school for a Master’s in Education degree. This helps them to be better teachers and helps them increase their earnings. However, the Master’s in Education degree allows for a higher degree of specialization than the Bachelor of Science degree. Here, we will look at the steps to getting an online masters education – what grades to teach.

One factor that may determine what grades one chooses to teach in their chosen field is the grade level that is currently being taught. Though it is not always the case, many teachers prefer to work with a single age group throughout their career. Normally, divisions within the Master of Science in education degree fall along the divisions of primary, elementary, middle school, junior high, and high school with many specialties covering two or more of these age groups.

Another factor that may determine the precise specialty one chooses for his/her online masters education is the subject that is being taught. For example, specializing in science means that one is qualified to teach general science to grades k-8. Beyond that, one should seek an online masters education in the specific science that he/she desires to teach, such as chemistry, biology, or physics.

If one is looking to advance beyond the position of teacher and get into school administration, he/she may choose to take online courses in the specialty of teacher leadership. It is also a good idea to have one of the other specialties as a backup in the event that administration positions are not readily available.

It is, therefore, necessary to do some research into the schools one is considering to learn of their accreditation and whether or not courses taken with them will transfer to another institution if needed.

Obtaining an online masters education is easier now than it was in the past. However, there are some steps that must be taken in order to accomplish this very admirable goal. The first, and possibly the most important, is to determine what subject and what grade level one wishes to teach.

This will go a long way toward determining where one will take classes. After all, one would not wish to enroll in an online university that did not offer the necessary coursework to achieve the specialized online masters education to pursue the specialty of one’s choice.
